How to Show Up in Google AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews now sit above the classic blue links on a large share of searches, summarising an answer and citing a handful of sources. Getting your brand into that summary, or cited as one of its sources, is a different job from ranking a page at position one. It rewards clear, quotable content and a strong third-party footprint more than classic on-page tricks. Here is what the evidence supports.

Where AI Overviews fire, and who already sits in them. On most commercial and how-to head terms in this space, an Overview appears and Reddit ranks in the top three organically. Data from DataForSEO.

The sources those Overviews cite are concentrated, and community content leads.

    Share of AI citations

    Most-cited domains in AI answers

Share of all LLM citations by domain: Reddit 40.1%, Wikipedia 26.3%, YouTube 23.5%. From a Semrush analysis of roughly 150,000 citations across 5,000 keywords, June 2025. Reddit is the single most-cited source on the web for AI answers. Source: Semrush.

Structure decides the rest. Analyses of AI citations find roughly 44 per cent come from the top third of the page, and listicles account for about 40.9 per cent of citations, so lead with the answer.

What AI Overviews actually pull from

Overviews assemble an answer from multiple sources and cite some of them. Those sources skew heavily towards consensus and community content. Reddit is the most-cited domain across AI answers at 40.1 per cent in one Semrush study, and forums and roundups feature prominently. So appearing depends on being part of the wider conversation in your category, not only on your own page.

    Structure content to be quoted

Once a page is in the running, structure decides whether it is used. Lead with a direct answer near the top, since a large share of AI citations come from the opening of a page. Use plain declarative sentences, back claims with specific numbers and detail, and add FAQ blocks phrased the way people actually ask. Hedged, buried prose gets skipped. How to get cited by AI goes deeper on this.

    Build the off-page footprint

The stronger lever is off your site. AI visibility correlates most with third-party mentions and video, per Ahrefs. Earn mentions in the roundups, comparisons and communities that discuss your category, because those are the pages an Overview is likely to cite. Genuine Reddit presence matters here, which we cover in how to get cited on Reddit.

Use schema and clarity, but do not overrate them

Structured data and clean, well-organised pages help models parse and trust your content, and they are worth doing. They are not, on their own, enough to earn a citation if the wider web does not corroborate you. Treat schema as table stakes, not a shortcut.

    What to stop doing

The things that do not work: keyword-stuffing, thin pages produced at scale to chase Overviews, and the myth that community keywords in your slugs earn citations. Google's spam systems target manufactured content, and these tactics can do more harm than good. There is more on why in does GEO actually work.

    Expect volatility, and measure

AI Overviews are unstable. Which sources they cite changes with model updates, sometimes sharply. Track whether your pages appear as Overview sources for your target questions over weeks, not in a single check, and watch named mentions as well as citations. Our AI Overview tracker guide covers how to set that up, and you can start with the free AI visibility check.

    The short version

To show up in AI Overviews, be part of the wider conversation your buyers have, structure your pages to be quoted, keep your data clean, and measure over time. The on-page work is necessary but secondary. The footprint is what gets you cited.

    Frequently asked questions

    What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of many Google searches, above the classic list of links. They answer the query directly and cite a handful of sources. For brands, being named in the summary or cited as a source is a distinct goal from ranking a page in the traditional results.

How do I get my website cited in an AI Overview?

Be part of the wider conversation the Overview draws on, through mentions in roundups, comparisons and communities, and structure your pages to be quoted by leading with a direct answer and backing it with specifics. Off-page footprint tends to matter more than any single on-page change.

Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?

It helps at the margin by making your content easier to parse and trust, and it is worth implementing. It is not a shortcut on its own, because a citation still depends on the wider web corroborating what your page says. Treat schema as table stakes rather than a lever that works in isolation.

Why do Reddit threads appear in AI Overviews so often?

Because AI answers lean heavily on community and consensus content, and Reddit is the single most-cited domain across them. Threads read as first-person experience, stay fresh as comments accrue, and Google licenses Reddit content, all of which push them into Overviews for opinion and recommendation queries.

Can I stop AI Overviews from appearing?

As a searcher you can reduce them through your own settings, which we cover in [removing AI Mode from Google Search](/blog/remove-ai-mode-from-google-search). As a brand you cannot control whether an Overview appears on a query; you can only influence whether you are cited when it does.

My name is Matiss Katanenko and I co-founded Honeyb, the AI visibility platform that tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and the other major AI engines talk about brands. Before Honeyb I ran SEO for fast-growing companies across the US and Europe, including one of America's 500 fastest-growing companies. The numbers I am proudest of: taking a site from zero to 200,000 monthly visitors in five months, and over $10M in client revenue attributed to organic search. I still run experiments across ten-plus of my own domains to test what actually works in SEO, programmatic SEO and AI search, and those experiments are what this blog reports on. My focus today is AI search visibility: how brands get retrieved, ranked and referenced by LLMs. I'm based in Riga, Latvia. In my free time I'm in the sauna, on a padel court, or behind a drum kit.
