Searchmetrics Visibility Score: How It Worked and the 4 Tools That Replaced It in 2026

Searchmetrics' SEO Visibility Score was the standard European SEO metric for over a decade. The product wound down its self-serve tier in 2024 and shifted to enterprise consulting. Here's what the Visibility Score actually measured, the four tools most teams have moved to, and how the visibility-score concept has shifted to AI search.

The Searchmetrics SEO Visibility Score was the dominant SEO visibility metric across European markets from the early 2010s to roughly 2023. It scored a domain's overall visibility across a fixed keyword set, weighted by search volume and ranking position. Searchmetrics shifted its self-serve product positioning in 2023-2024 toward enterprise consulting, leaving a generation of European SEO teams looking for a replacement metric.

What the Searchmetrics Visibility Score actually measured

The score was a single composite number representing how visible a domain was across a fixed set of keywords. The calculation weighted each keyword by search volume and assigned diminishing returns by ranking position (a #1 ranking was worth more than a #5, which was worth more than a #10). Movements in the score over time were treated as the canonical European SEO performance indicator, in much the same way that Ahrefs Domain Rating and Moz Domain Authority became canonical metrics in the US market.

The score was particularly trusted because it was independent of the brand under measurement (you could see your competitors' Visibility Scores too) and because Searchmetrics maintained large, consistent keyword sets per market. The downside was that it conflated organic SEO performance with paid-search behaviour for some brands and didn't adapt as the SEO landscape moved toward intent and SERP feature visibility.

    What replaced it

Four tools have inherited the role in different ways. The first is the natural replacement for the AI search visibility use case that didn't exist when Searchmetrics' score was designed. The other three are direct replacements for the traditional-SEO version of the same concept.

    1. Honeyb

Best for: monitoring visibility across AI search engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Grok). The 2026 equivalent of the Visibility Score, applied to where buyer research is actually happening now.

Honeyb tracks share of voice across the major AI engines on a fixed prompt set, computes a per-engine and aggregated visibility score, and shows movement over time. The methodology is structurally similar to Searchmetrics' original approach (fixed input set, weighted scoring, time-series view) but applied to AI search rather than Google rankings. For brands whose buyers have moved their research from Google to AI, this is the natural successor to the Visibility Score concept.

Pricing starts at $29/month for single-engine monitoring; multi-engine and enterprise tiers above. Run a free check to see your current visibility across the major engines.

    2. Sistrix

Best for: the traditional SEO Visibility Index use case across European markets. The most direct functional replacement.

Sistrix has long been the closest European competitor to Searchmetrics and is the most direct replacement for the SEO Visibility Score. The Sistrix Visibility Index calculates similarly: a composite score across a fixed keyword set, weighted by search volume and ranking position. Coverage is strongest in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK. Pricing starts at €99/month.

Most European SEO teams who relied on Searchmetrics' score in 2022 are now using the Sistrix Visibility Index for the same purpose.

    3. Ahrefs

Best for: backlink-driven domain strength assessment via Domain Rating, plus rank-tracking-driven visibility via the Rank Tracker.

Ahrefs doesn't publish a Visibility Score by name, but two of its core metrics serve similar functions. Domain Rating (DR) measures backlink-driven domain strength on a 0-100 scale. The Rank Tracker measures rank position changes over time across a defined keyword set. Combined, they give the same multi-angle visibility view that Searchmetrics' score gave, with the trade-off that you compute the composite yourself rather than getting it as a single number. Pricing starts at $129/month.

    4. SEMrush

Best for: keyword-position visibility tracking plus Authority Score for domain strength. Largest keyword database in the market.

SEMrush's Visibility metric in the Position Tracking tool computes a percentage based on your CTR-weighted SERP positions for a custom keyword set. It's the closest direct equivalent in feel to the Searchmetrics score, though it requires you to bring your own keyword list rather than relying on Searchmetrics' fixed market sets. Authority Score serves as the domain-strength complement. Pricing starts at $140/month.

Why the visibility-score concept itself has shifted

The original Searchmetrics Visibility Score was designed for a world where the buyer's research path was almost entirely Google search rankings on non-branded keywords. That world still exists, but it has narrowed. In 2026, a meaningful share of the visibility a brand actually receives happens inside AI-generated answers, not on Google's results pages. The same buyer who would have searched 'best CRM for small teams' in 2018 and arrived at a Google results page is now typing the same query into ChatGPT and getting a four-brand short list with no link clicks.

Practically, this means measuring SEO Visibility Score alone now captures a shrinking share of total visibility. The teams that ran Searchmetrics-based monitoring in 2022 are increasingly running Sistrix for traditional SEO visibility and an AI visibility platform for the AI surface in parallel. The metric is the same idea; the surface has changed.

    How to choose

Three questions decide which of these is right for your team.

Are you measuring traditional Google rankings or AI search? If your buyer research happens on AI engines (most B2B SaaS and increasingly e-commerce), Honeyb is the right starting point. If it still mostly happens on Google (still true for local services, some consumer categories, and high-intent transactional searches), Sistrix or Ahrefs is the direct replacement for the old Visibility Score role.

Are you primarily European? Sistrix has the deepest European market coverage and the most direct methodology match to the original Searchmetrics score.

Are you tracking your own keyword set or a market index? Sistrix and Searchmetrics relied on fixed market indices. Ahrefs and SEMrush require you to bring your own keyword list. Honeyb operates on a prompt set you define for the AI side. The 'bring your own' approach is more flexible but requires more upfront work.

    Closing

The Searchmetrics Visibility Score served the SEO industry well for over a decade. Its successor metrics live in Sistrix, Ahrefs, and SEMrush for traditional search, and in AI visibility platforms like Honeyb for the surface where most discovery now happens. My name is Matiss Katanenko and I co-founded Honeyb, the AI visibility platform that tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and the other major AI engines talk about brands. I'm based in Riga, Latvia. Before Honeyb I spent years on the agency side running SEO and content programs for fast-growing brands across the US and Europe. That work is where I watched AI search start to compress the entire discovery channel into a four-brand short list, and decided to build the tool I wished agencies had. In my free time I'm in the sauna, on a padel court, or behind a drum kit.
